Genomic Characteristics of Non-Progressor Multiple Myeloma (NPMM)

Although it is known that a small minority of patients with smoldering multiple myeloma (SMM) will progress to symptomatic MM, studies of genetic factors to predict which patients will progress have focused largely on patients that do progress, rather than those who do not.

Anil Aktas-Samur, PhD and colleagues analyzed transcriptomic and genomic changes in patients who progressed to MM, as well as in those who did not. A significantly lower mutation load, different mutation patterns, lower heterogeneity, and lower focal genomic loss were found in non-progressors compared to progressors.

Using this information, the researchers were able to develop a genomic model with high sensitivity and specificity for characterizing non-progressor SMM.
